Westminster Cycling Campaign News: May 2010
This month:
We have seen plans for a missing link in Westminster's cycle network from
Mayfair into Soho.
The proposals are for an eastbound cycle contraflow lane in Hanover Street
and to control with signals the junction of Hanover Street and Regent Street.
This scheme would enable eastbound cyclists to reach Great Marlborough Street
from Berkeley Street. At present there is only a westbound link from Great
Marlborough Street to Grosvenor Street via Maddox Street. Using this route is a
good way for cyclists to avoid unpleasant conditions along Oxford Street.
Conditions will also be improved for pedestrians, with the present staggered
crossings via 'sheep pens' replaced by 'straight-across' crossings.
The scheme is the most significant feature of a package of measures
associated with the Cycle Hire project - see last
month's news item.

Transport for London is now consulting stakeholders about improvements to the
Victoria Embankment (see previous
story in March),
Features include:

Sorry, it won't be quite like this!
- New cycle lanes in both directions. Cycle lanes will be introduced
wherever possible on the road. However, TfL says it will not be possible to
provide continuous cycle lane markings owing to the presence of existing
kerbside activity such as loading and coach parking bays. Coloured surfacing
will not be used and the cycle lanes will be marked using only white line
markings.
- New Advanced Cycle Stop Lines (ASLs). These will be provided at all
junctions with traffic lights on Victoria Embankment. They will also be
provided on side roads at their junctions with Victoria Embankment.
- New consistent lane markings. Currently, some sections of Victoria
Embankment have two or three marked lanes, whilst other sections have no
lane markings. This scheme will provide two marked lanes for general traffic
on the majority of the road. TfL expects these measures to reduce the risk of
collisions, regulate speed and will help to smooth traffic flow.
TfL expects to start work on the scheme in late summer.

H2 Clubs are planning to open a low-carbon commuter club in Soho. The
facility, near the junction of Dufours Place and Broadwick Street, will offer:
- A manned state-of-the-art reception area and fruit bar.
- 40-60 showers and male and female changing rooms.
- Two types of bespoke locker available to rent.
- Towel hire.
- Quality environments with Wi-Fi, surround sound systems, vanity bays and
hair dryers/straighteners.
- Treatment rooms offering personal training, physio, sports massage, yoga,
pilates etc.
- A concierge service providing dry cleaning, laundry and clothes
drying.
- A retail point for cycle and running clothing and accessories.
- H2 Bike parks offering secure parking, CCTV, cycle servicing/repair centre
and Smart Water Protection.
- H2 Bike Register.
