Westminster's first cycle superhighway has now opened between Chelsea and Lambeth Bridges. It forms the final part of a longer route, originating in Wandsworth.
As the photo shows, there is a two-metre mandatory cycle lane (marked by a solid line) along much of the Westminster section. This is wide enough to allow a faster cyclist to overtake a slower one.
Observations so far suggest that motor vehicles - even motorcycles - are keeping out of the cycle lane. They are allowed to cross it to make left turns or to reach bus stops, loading bays etc. At these points, the cycle lane is marked with a broken line. We have been pleased to note that motorists appear to be taking care in crossing the cycle lane.
