A number of improvements have been proposed for Hyde Park Corner as part of the project for Cycle Superhighway 9.
The existing cycle crossings at Hyde Park Corner were not designed to handle current volumes of cyclists, let alone any further increase. Cyclists are also delayed by having to wait for four green signals to complete the crossing between Hyde Park and Constitution Hill.
At the north-west corner, TfL engineers are proposing to open up a second arch of the Ionic screen at the entrance to Hyde Park for the use of northbound cyclists, who will be able to cross directly from the central area of Hyde Park Corner. Southbound cyclists will continue to go through the arch they currently use, but the road layout will be changed so that they can wait in the carriageway for the second green signal - as many do informally at present (see photo).
At the south-east corner, engineers will review the phasing of the traffic signals at the junction with Constitution Hill, with a view to reducing waiting times for cyclists and enabling eastbound cyclists to reach the junction in time for the green signal without having to race. A number of measures are also proposed to reduce the risk of collision between cyclists and pedestrians and cyclists in the vicinity of the Wellington Arch.
Cycle Superhighway 9 will run between Hounslow and Hyde Park Corner via Hammersmith, where a safe route will be provided through the Broadway. In Westminster, the route will run along the South Carriage Drive of Hyde Park, avoiding the heavily-used path alongside Rotten Row. The route is scheduled for completion in 2015.
