Westminster is proposing to install new crossings of the Harrow Road
between St Mary's Square and Hermitage Street.
The main features of the scheme are:
A contraflow cycle lane in Hermitage Street, which will
involve the construction
of two traffic islands at either end of Hermitage Street and the widening
of the footway in
Hermitage Street at its junction with Harrow Road
A new crossing point between Hermitage Street and the
island located
immediately north of the junction of Harrow Road and Hermitage Street
Crossings of the eastbound and westbound carriageways of Harrow Road
Modification and conversion to a cycle ramp of the existing pedestrian
ramp that links St
Mary's Terrace and Harrow Road
A new pedestrian footway and ramp to link Harrow Road and
St Mary's
Terrace, immediately north of the proposed toucan crossing on Harrow Road
(eastbound)
Lighting upgrade under Westway and on the approaches to the toucan
crossings
This scheme is part of the project to build a new street sweeper depot under Westway
at this point, releasing the existing depot in North Wharf Road for redevelopment.
The route links to the existing bridge over the Paddington Basin.
This means that the new crossings are likely to be of particular benefit to pedestrians and cyclists
travelling between North Paddington and the areas on both sides of the Basin
– as well as the depot staff.
Cyclists will, however, have to dismount to cross the bridge.

The site of the proposed crossing
To our knowledge, these will be the first toucan crossings ever to be installed on roads
managed by Westminster.
