A recent cycle count has shown a surge in cyclists, halting the stagnation of
recent years.
The count, conducted in Hyde Park near Brook Gate, showed an increase of 43%
over 2010 and a staggering increase of 342% from 2000, when the nearby crossings of Park
Lane opened. The count reverses the small decline in numbers recorded in 2009 and
2010.
Likely causes of the increase include:
The introduction of the cycle hire scheme
The growing popularity of folding bicycles among commuters using Paddington Station
Improved cycle links across Marble Arch and Bayswater Road
The availability of an alternative route when the North Carriage Drive of Hyde Park is closed
for events
A growing realisation that cycling is simply the best form of transport in
Central London
