Cycle Training at Schools

Westminster's Road Safety Unit organizes cycling courses at schools. Each course takes about eight and covers:

• Starting and stopping
• Turning right and left
• Passing obstacles
• Keeping control
• Basic maintenance
• The Highway Code

Instruction begins in the school playground but continues on the road. 

Other Information

• Those taking part should normally be at least ten years old.
• They need to bring along a bike that will fit them.
• Those who successfully complete the course should then be able to ride safely with adults in quieter streets.
• Cycles are checked for roadworthiness at the start of the course.

Training for Adults

Westminster's Road Safety Unit can also arrange training for adults. Training sessions usually take place on a one-to-one basis and last about two hours.  After checking over your bike, the instructor will take you through some basic manoeuvres in quiet nearby streets. He will then accompany you on all or part of a journey you expect to make regularly, typically work to home.

Become a cycle trainer!

In recent years Westminster has considerably expanded its cycle training programme for both children and adults. This can continue only if there are enough instructors. So, if you have some time available during the day either during the school holidays or during the school term, contact the Road Safety unit on 020 7641 6318 or email cyclist_trainer@westminster.gov.uk for further information on becoming one. You would be paid on an hourly basis.
